Sculptra and Sifuyan show different reconstitution behaviors despite identical ingredients
Two poly-L-lactic acid formulations with identical labeled ingredients reconstitute differently due to variations in their carboxymethyl cellulose structures, meaning clinicians cannot assume identical preparation protocols for similar biostimulators. In an August 2026 publication in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, researchers evaluated more than 1000 vials each of Sculptra (PLLA-SCA by Galderma) and Sifuyan (PLLA-SIF by Meiyan Space and Sihuan Pharm). Both formulations contain exactly 150 mg of PLLA microparticles, 90 mg of CMC, and 127.5 mg of mannitol, and both were reconstituted with 5 mL of sterile water.
Despite these identical quantities, Sculptra requires five minutes of shaking and forms a floating upper layer of CMC micro-lumps (micro-fisheyes) that slowly reduces over 96 hours of hydration. Conversely, Sifuyan requires only one minute of shaking and shows no early visible lumps, remaining homogeneous for two to three minutes before starting a gradual particle sedimentation that stabilizes by 30 minutes. For your practice, this highlights that different CMC structural parameters dictate distinct handling. Plan for a multi-day hydration window to resolve micro-lumps when preparing Sculptra, whereas Sifuyan demands less shaking but quicker injection post-agitation to prevent rapid sedimentation.
