Dermatologists report widespread botulinum toxin use during pregnancy and lactation

A survey of US board-certified dermatologists published by Dermatologic Surgery reveals that three-quarters of respondents have administered or received botulinum toxin type A during lactation, highlighting a significant disconnect between official conservative guidelines and actual clinical behavior. The cross-sectional survey collected data from 177 respondents during a two-week period. Among those surveyed, 75% reported administering or receiving botulinum toxin while breastfeeding. Specifically, 8% of respondents reported toxin use during the first trimester, 5% during the second trimester, and 7% during the third trimester. Crucially, the survey recorded zero reported adverse effects during lactation and zero fetal complications during pregnancy.
